Course Information
Description	Introduction to Speech Level Singing philosophy and technique with goals related to commercial voice. Emphasizes sight singing and harmony singing applicable to commercial background singing.
Prerequisites	None
Learning Outcomes	1. Students will demonstrate comprehension of the basics of vocal technique reading material. Identifies all main ideas, supporting details, and vocabulary in reading material; demonstrates a full understanding of the reading (PSLO 1) 2. Students will acquire a basic understanding of vocal health and hygiene applicable to many different styles of singing. (PSLO 2) 3. Students will acquire communicative and expressive skills applicable to their own voices. (PSLO 2,4,5) 4. Students will develop a professional, disciplined approach to vocal performance skills (PSLO 2,4,5) 5. Students will acquire harmony singing applicable to commercial background singing. (PSLO 1, 2, 4,5)
Core Objectives	Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral, and visual communication. * Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts, and constructing solutions. * Personal Responsibility: Students will demonstrate the ability to connect choices, actions, and consequences to ethical decision-making.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Recommended textbook: Your Voice: the Basics by Scott McCoy, Inside View Press, 2016 Printed sheet music and karaoke recordings of songs and arias that can be found online, for free or at an affordable price at libraries, and book stores.
Lecture Topics Outline	Week 1: Critical listening, vocal faults, conceptual and corrective measures Week 2: Critical listening to commercial and classical singers Week 3: Breathing techniques and posture Week 4: Basic of anatomy and physiology of the voice, review of breathing exercises Week 5: Understanding phonation and resonance Week 6: Vocal Health Week 7: Vocal Fitness: developing a routine to warm up the voice Week 8: Vocal fitness through applied repertoire Week 8: Vowel articulation and vocal technique, concept and practical exercises Week 9: Vowel articulation and vocal technique, concept and practical exercises Week 10:Registration, concept and practical exercises Week 11:Registration exercises. Midterm project. Week 12:Students' topic presentation1, review of vocal exercises Week 13: Students topic presentation 2, review of vocal exercises Week 14: Preparing repertoire 1 Week 15:Preparing repertoire 2 Week 16: Final Exam presentation lecture and or performance with or without Juries.
Major Assignments Schedule	The midterm and the final exam may be a combination of written, oral presentation, and/or performance.

Grading Scale	90 - 100=A    80 - 89=B    70 - 79=C     60 - 69=D    Below 59 = F

Attendance Policy	Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Classes start on time and being late will count as an absence. More than 5 absences can drastically affect your final grade.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
